An Interview About Marriage

It's National Marriage Week, so I thought maybe I'd talk about marriage... like I'd talk about anything else, right?! ;) We were asked to answer some questions about our marriage for Joe's brother's school assignment and I thought they would be perfect to share here on the blog! It's convenient because I didn't have to torture Joe for an "interview", I just had to convince him to forward his responses to me. My brother-in-law said that his favorite part was how Joe responds in short, incomplete sentences and I go on for two or three. I loved that some of our responses were pretty similar but for different reasons.

Married & In Love

1. How old were you when you got married?
Joe: 23.
Amberly: Almost 23.

2. Do you think that was a good age to get married? Why? Why not?
Joe: Yes, just old enough to know better.
Amberly: Yes, because I knew who I was, had done some things for myself, and had a lot of fun. Getting married squashed some of the big plans I'd made for myself for the next year, but I didn't mind at all because I was head over heels in love.

3. What is the happiest memory you have relating to your marriage?
Joe: Vacationin'
Amberly: All of my happy memories are vacations we've taken together and the weekend getaways when we've spent a couple of days just hanging out with each other and nothing else.

4. What qualities do you think are most important for a happy marriage?
Joe: Unity in everything
Amberly: Communication and humility.

5. What advice would you give to someone who wasn't certain whether to marry a particular person?
Joe: Just do it, could be a good story either way.
Amberly: Can you imagine your life without them? Do they make you undeniably happy? Do they make you want to be a better person? Are you yourself when you're around them? Go for it! You won't regret it!

6. What is the most important quality for a mate to possess?
Joe: Willingness to work hard
Amberly: Willingness to support and uplift your spouse and motivation.

7. Has your marriage changed over time? If so, how?
Joe: Yes, we are more relaxed and we have less homemade food.
Amberly: Yes, we're more relaxed and I don't care as much about making every moment, meal, date night, etc. perfect.

8. Is your marriage what you expected it to be?
Joe: Ahhh yeeeaah!
Amberly: I don't know if I had any expectations for marriage, but it hasn't disappointed me, so I'd say it's been good.

9. Have you experienced a crisis in your marriage?
Joe: Getting a dog
Amberly: Our puppy has caused some crisis' and I would say our move was a crisis because it was last minute, and stressful.

10. What is the most important thing you have done in your marriage to keep it happy?
Joe: Take mini vacations
Amberly: Plan time together because our schedules are so busy that we sometimes don't talk much for an entire week and then we're grumpy and annoyed with each other. So date nights, weekends away, late night walks, etc.

11. What ideas have you disagreed on? How did you go about resolving them?
Joe: Whether or not to clean a little every day or just once a week. Well, my other half doesn't follow her own policy of a little each day, so I won and I clean once a week.
Amberly: Cleaning, that's basically it. And we've just learned to deal with it. Now that I'm in school and really busy, I appreciate Joe's big cleaning day because the apartment gets cleaned and I don't feel as stressed, but I still try to do a few little things every day to keep it that way afterward.

What would your answers to some of these questions be?

Amberly

Our biggest fights are about cleaning. We can never agree on a cleaning schedule. I usually life to clean when I get in the mood to clean and then also do little things every day. Jeremy likes to clean, well never, but he does it to make me happy. I wish we could compromise on the cleaning issue.

Holy cow!! :) You should see how yours and Colten's answers are similar and different. I think the longer we've been married, the more we agree on things like this. I just like that we agree on what we fight about ;) It's something we've accepted haha
