25 Questions: Holiday Style

My good friend Jessy from The Artsy Cajun had some fun holiday questions on her blog a while ago and encouraged everyone to answer them as well. Since Christmas is this week, I decided I'd join in!

Eggnog or hot chocolate?
I don't really love the taste of eggnog, but I'm definitely a hot chocolate person! I could drink a cup of hot chocolate every single day.

Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
Hmm... well, when I was growing up, my siblings and I would take our stockings down from the fireplace on Christmas Eve and choose a couch cushion, chair or other place and claim it as ours. Santa would fill our stockings and leave our presents on that designated spot, and they weren't ever wrapped. We've never designated Santa gifts in our marriage, except I think once when I bought us something as a joint gift. I guess we'll see whether Santa wraps gifts or not when we have kids in the future.

Colored lights on tree/house or white?
I don't like the multi colored lights for some reason. I saw a house this year that had red and green and those were gorgeous!! When I put lights on our railing last year, we just had white icicle lights. :)

Do you hang mistletoe?
I have a couple of years now, and this year I bought a "kissing ball" of fake mistletoe this year, so I plan on hanging it up every year. Now I just need to get Joe on board with the purpose of mistletoe because he still thinks it's silly. ;)

When do you hang your decorations up?
The weekend after Thanksgiving and no sooner. I like to leave my fall decor up as long as possible but I also love my Christmas, so that goes up as soon as fall holidays are over. This year it took me longer than I wanted to get the tree up, but I tried.

What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?
Oh, hmm.. I love cheesy potatoes (aka funeral potatoes if you're Mormon) which is funny because I don't usually eat potatoes all that often. My brother-in-law always makes a yummy orzo salad that I look forward to and I love a good cheeseball with crackers. I don't know, I like all holiday food because it's food and food is yummy!

Favorite holiday memory as a child?
Decorating sugar cookies, baking cinnamon rolls and delivering plates of them to neighbors. My mom wants to start a tradition of Christmas baking with my sisters and I think it will be a lot of fun.

What is on your Christmas wish list?
Um... I'm not really sure. I think I just sent people the link to my Pinterest and Amazon wish lists. I really kind of want the Anne of Green Gables boxed set DVD's, and there's a fun traditions book at Deseret Book that I want as well. Oh, and I really want a nice external hard drive or cloud of some kind, so boring and adult. :P

Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
The two years that we've been married, we've opened our Christmas presents at midnight on Christmas Eve/Christmas. This year I want to be more patient and not open gifts until Christmas morning, we'll see if I can do it. Growing up, we always opened pajamas on Christmas Eve, like every other family, and it was always entertaining when we'd ask my mom if we could open pajamas and she'd say, "Who said there were pajamas to open?" like it's not a tradition or something.

How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
Ours has a blue and purple snowflake and jingle bell theme! Lots of glitter and sparkles.

Snow? Love it or dread it?
I don't mind it, it's really pretty, I just don't like to drive in it or walk in it. So I guess we have a love/hate relationship.

Real tree or fake tree?
I would love to have a real tree because it smells yummy, they're just sappy and get pine needles every where.

Do you remember your favorite gift?
The gift that I've enjoyed the most lately is my Gilmore Girls DVD set that Joe gave me the first Christmas we were together. I watch them every year, they were my best friends when I had mono and had to sit on the couch a lot, and I never get tired of them. He regrets giving them to me because I watch them every year and it's torture for him, but I love them!

What's the most important thing about Christmas for you?
Time with family, hands down. Traditions, parties, game nights, big dinners, I LOVE spending time with our families. Extended, immediate, our little two person and one dog family, they're all great!

What is your favorite holiday dessert?
Oh, hmm... such a hard decision!! I love English Toffee, fudge, anything chocolate... all the treats... This year I decided that I could be an elf because every year my diet consists of sugar, sugar and more sugar. Sure I feel crappy afterward, but it sure is delicious!

What is your favorite tradition?
Hot chocolate and Christmas lights.

What tops your tree?
A silver, glittery star!

Do you prefer giving or receiving?
I get so excited to give people their presents, it's hard to wait until Christmas!

What is your favorite Christmas song?
I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas. Second favorite: Believe by Josh Groban

Candy canes, yuck or yum?
Meh, they're not yucky, but I don't usually eat many of them or crave them at all.

Favorite Christmas movie?
Elf, hands down!

What do you leave for Santa?
Now that I'm married, nothing. We always left sugar cookies and milk before when I was growing up. I have a really cute matching plate and cup that I can't wait to use one day for Santa stuff.

Do you have a Christmas morning traditions?
I'm trying to start some for our family. Orange rolls, eggs, bacon and hot chocolate in the morning, open our gifts, sleep in and snuggle. I realize these will be unrealistic in the future because what kid is going to go for a sleeping in tradition?

Do you prefer to shop on-line or at the mall?
This year I've done the majority of my shopping online and it's been really convenient. I don't mind going out shopping, but if you can't find what you want at one store, you've wasted time and have to go somewhere else. I'm slowly turning into an online shopper for most things.

Christmas letter or Christmas card?
I like to do a combination. Photo Christmas card with the highlights of our year! :)

  6. You're going to have to wait since parts of my site broke late last night (UGH), and it's not show-off worthy anymore. I'm working on changing that, though!! God willing I'll be able to have it done by later this PM.

Now I'm craving funeral potatoes :)!!
